Comment: Walker Glacier shows obvious signs of recession with the bare earth along its edges indicating the depth of the glacier in recent times. The first explorers down the Alsek River had to paddle under the glacier where it intersected the river!

Alaska 404 * The Channel of Death into Alsek lake was free of ice at this time, but all the water from the Alsek River submerged under the icebergs at the point of the Knob island. The key to safety when rowing into Alsek Lake was avoiding the current that would dissintegrate a boat under the icebergs.
